A Sketch is a drawing mainly based on memory and spot observation and not to scale. Sometimes we draw a rough drawing of an area to tell where a particular place is located with respect to other places. Such a rough drawing drawn without a scale is called a Sketch Map.

Distance, Direction and Symbol.

Scales are required to represent the Actual distance between places on ground in a relative measurement on Map. We can say Maps are drawn to reduced scales. But this reduction is done very carefully so that the distance between the places is real. It is done in a way that a small distance on Paper represents a large distance on ground.
