As we progress in our study of the language, we encounter more difficult words. Once we get acquainted with advanced vocabulary, we can confidently face those competitive exams and clear them successfully.

Today, we discuss a few vocabulary words which come under the category-Advanced Vocabulary. I hope this goes a long way in helping you understand your questions and answer them better.

1. Mire-entangled

The new policy is mired in a controversy of sorts, as the opposition alleges nepotism.

2. Barrage-deluge

The leader faced a barrage of questions from the journalists, following the release of their election manifesto.

3. Rollicking-cheerful and noisy

The two batsmen shared a rollicking stand of a hundred runs.

4. Illustrate-explain usually through pictures

The teacher illustrated the point by backing up with the required facts and figures.

5. Chagrin-disappointment or anger

To my chagrin, the children continued playing and breaking the windows on our street.

6. Vignette- a miniature illustration of a work

Vignettes of the artist`s work were displayed to attract an audience to the exhibition.

7. Chicanery- a deceptive mode of operation to accomplish goals

The chicanery employed in transferring money to a Swiss bank account went unnoticed by the officials.

8. Retrospect- when viewed with the new information available to us

In retrospect, the candidate could have prepared well for the interview and secured the job.

9. Laconic- economical but effective use of words 

The Manager is known for his laconic replies to his team`s queries.

10. Diligent- careful and organized approach

He is a diligent worker, researching well: he produces the best results.
