I teach freestyle and staff notations in keyboard and guitar from absolute beginner to intermediate.
There’s the hardware part, and the software part.
Hardware part: Both MIDI keyboards need to have the same type of MIDI ports. Older keyboards have 5 pin DIN ports, and newer keyboards have USB ports. There are cables available that can connect these different keyboards to gether.
Depending on the capabilities of the two keyboards, you select one to be the ‘master’, and the other one to be the ‘slave’. Both keyboards need to have their MIDI channels set to the same number (1–16), or the master keyboard can be set to a channel number and the slave keyboard can be set to ‘OMNI’, meaning that it responds to any and all of the sixteen channels. The master keyboard will send MIDI clock signals, start and stop times, and ALL NOTES OFF messages to the slave keyboard. It will also send MIDI note numbers, controller information such as pitch bend and modulation wheel positions, volume info, pan, etc. The slave keyboard will, of course, only respond to the info that it can. Any info that exceeds its capabilities will be ignored.
