There are many differences between stress and pressure which are as follows 1. Stress is internal resistive force per unit area whereas pressure is externally applied normal force per unit area. 2.Stress can be in any direction i.e. can be normal or parallel to the plane area whereas pressure always acts normal to the surface. 3.Stress is a second order tensor whereas pressure is a scalar quantity. 4.Due to pressure ,stress is induced but due to stress pressure is not induced. 5.Pressure can be measured with the help of pressure gauges but stress cannot be measured. 6.Magnitude of pressure is same in all the directions ( Pascal's law) but magnitude of stress is different in different directions. read less
