Dear Student.. the 4 main characterstics of commercial farming are as follows:

1) the commercial crops require more fertilizers but require less water for irrigqating the cutivaltion of these crops such as sugarcane, tapioca, cardamom, spices , and require modern pesticides too to get a better productivity but will earn more Profits than rice pr whear or jowar or maize od even millets..per hectare or per acre or even on less quantities of land

2) it requires very little maintenance cost and less irrigation or water than cereals crops

3) it can be cultivated by very small & marginal famers cultivating small tiny pieces of land

4) it can benefit the large farmers and he can get more profits by ONE Crop .unlike Rice or whear which is 2 crops per season or 3 per year in tanjore district in Tamilnadu , a rice granary of south India

5)In North & South India, commercial crops like tea, coffee, sugarcane, causurina ,andcostly ones like cardamom, apples,oranges ,and spices are grown in hilly states like kerala,karnataka 7 in hilly parts og Norht east & north west like Assam, megalaya kashmir , and M.P & U.P.. etc.,

6) cash commercial farming will support more migrant labourers & reduce dependancy on Agriculture .

7) It can support large farming & help subsistence farming too in poor states like orissa & bihar too

(i) The main characteristic of commercial farming is the use of high doses of modern inputs, like high yielding varieties of seeds, chemical fertilisers, insecticides and pesticides in order to obtain higher productivity.
(ii) The degree of commercialisation of agriculture varies from one region to another, for example rice is a commercial crop of Punjab and haryana but in Orissa it is a subsistence crop.
(iii) Plantation is also a type of commercial farming where a single crop is grown on a large area.
(iv) Plantations cover large areas using capital intensive inputs with the help of migrant labourers.
(v) In India tea, coffee, rubber, sugarcane, banana are important plantation crops.
